Trinity

May 6th, 2008 by Todd

While the word trinity does not appear in Scripture, the concept very clearly does.  Tertullian (Early church father AD155-220) was the first to use the word trinity in effort to summerize a great amount of biblical truth.  To say that God exists as a trinity does not mean there are three Gods, or that one God merely manifests himself as either Father, Son, and Holy Spirit on various occasions.

The Westminister Confession of Faith (1647) summarizes the doctrine by saying “In the unity of the Godhead there be three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.”  Wayne Grudem defines the doctrine of the Trinity as follows, “God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and each person is fully God, and there is one God.”

“The Trinity is one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons - Father, Son, and Spirit - who are each fully and equally God.  Person does not mean that God the Father or God the Spirit became human beings.  Rather, it means that each member of the Trinity thinks, acts, feels, speaks, and relates because they are persons and not impersonal forces.  Further, each member of the Trinity, is equally God, which means that they share divine attributes, such as eternally, omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence.  The doctrine of the Trinity seeks to hold all of the truth that God says himself in Scripture, such as the following truths, without dismissing or diminishing any truth.”   Mark Driscoll

Todd, Thanks for the Trinity explanation. We were just discussing that at last Thursday’s mens group. I’ll bring up your comments and it will not only aid greatly in the discussion, but also encourage others to read your blog.

Thank you, Todd! Years ago I remember thinking the Holy Spirit was a “vague and ethereal concept.” But the realization that he is a person, that the Triune God is a relational God within the Godhead, is amazing. Not too long ago, at a very dark place in my life, I suddenly had an image of the Three Persons opening up that Circle of Love and inviting me in. Because that’s what God has done for us, through Christ. What a blessing!
