We are preaching a series: Under the Sun – Searching for a Life Worth Living.  We are teaching through Ecclesiastes.  On week two, I was preaching on time, and my bottom line was God is sovereign.

When I was writing on the flip chart in the first worship hour, I mis-spelled Soveriegn (actual spelling = Sovereign).  I put the “I” in the wrong place.  Later in the day and even later in the week, I continued to think about that misspelling about how that is how we mess up this truth in our spiritual lives.  We put the “I” in the wrong place!  We often elevate ourselves above facing anything hard or any conflict.  When we do face a tough challenge, we look at God and ask “why”?

It is one thing to say God is sovereign in a worship service on Sunday, but it something all together different to say God is sovereign when your child dies, your husband leaves, you lose your job, your being sued in court, you friend betrays you, you cannot pay your bills, or your wreck your car.  Do we really trust God with the good and the bad things that happen in our lives?  Is God soveriegn or sovereign?

Does he reign over you at all times and in all situations?  Make sure the “I” is in the right place!

I heard a great quote by C.S. Lewis this week. “God whispers to us in our joy, but He shouts to us in our suffering” He is always sovereign! There are just some things in life that we will never understand, and rather than try to, we should enjoy the parts of life that do make sense, and entrust the rest to God’s care.

    Todd,
What was that saying you told us on June 28th that had to do with hindsight? It was something to the effect of having faith to do something today that would be explained later.
