Sword and the Stone

January 25th, 2010 by Todd

Yesterday, I preached part 2 of REIGN, “The Sword and the Stone”.  We looked at the probably the most famous chapter in the Old Testament, 1 Samuel 17.  It is the record of the epic battle David and Goliath.  As we looked at the conflict in the story, it was facinating to see the contrast between Saul and David.  They both faced this moment with a completely different response.

How do you define a man?  Man = ”piercer” (masculinity is initiation) - give provision or direction, security, and stability

Check out 1 Samuel 17

Three dangers of taking initiative

1. You will face discouragement v.33

2. You will be tempted to be someone else  v.38-40

3.  You will now face the giant  v.41-44

Three dangers of NOT taking initiative

1. People lose heart  v.32

2. Missed opportunity  v.45-47

3. No one surges forward  v.50-52

Which is more dangerous?

Did you know that God is the most masculine of all?  Why?  Because he initiated with us!  “You did not choose me, I chose you.” John 15:16

“God is so masculine, that all creation is feminine by comparison.” C.S. Lewis
