The whole concept of the pentatonic scale and negro spirituals is fascinating to me. Unfortunately Winley Phipps takes it a bit too far with speculation about the origin of “Amazing Grace”, a bit of rewriting history for emotional impact. John Newton undoubtedly never heard the tune to what we now know as “Amazing Grace” as the his lyrics were not paired with the now-famous melody until 28 yrs after his death. But it makes for a good story!
