This past Sunday, I completed our Junk Drawer series with a message “Dust it Off”.  The Junk Drawer series deals with the tension that often in the hurriedness of living we sweep and shove things into a junk drawer to hide from people coming into our home.  Over time this drawer fills up with often valuable items that could make life better and more meaningful.  At a later time, we might finally open the drawer and take inventory and recover something we have been missing.  The purpose of this series was to rediscover the tools needed for spiritual growth.

Why do people not study the Bible?

1. Intimidation

2. Boredom

3. Busyness

4. Laziness

5. Unbelief

*These could be seen as excuses, but they are better referenced as sins!

The Bible is an amazing book! [66 Books = 39 Old Testament + 27 New Testament]

  • Inpired by God, but recorded by men (2Timothy 3:16)
  • Written in 3 Languages: Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic
  • Written in over 40 generations (1,500)
  • Recorded by kings, peasants, philosophers, fishermen, poets, scholars
  • Written on 3 Continents: Asia, Africa, and Europe.

How Should I Study the Bible?  Psalm 1:1-6

1.  Enjoy the Word

2. Meditate on the Word

3. Live by the Word

What are the benefits of the Word?

Productivity

Prosperity

Eternity

Will your Bible be a paper weight, lost in a junk drawer or lived?

    Todd,
I loved your message Sunday…it hit home to me and just what God had been laying on my heart. Now that the kids are gone or doing thier own thing. I found myself this past weekend with lots of free time. I have said for years when that day comes and the kids are out the door I will have lots more time for that bible study I wanted to do or be able to read that book I have wanted to do. Well Saturday I came to the place where I could go and pick up my bible and start on that bible study that I have wanted to do. But I have to be honest, I chose to do something else. My prayer is for God to give me that hunger for his word and for me not to ingnore that hunger but to dig into his word daily. Side note… rented Book of Eli on Sunday afternoon, Emily and I had never seen it. Yes lots of violence but I liked the story, we do take having God’s word for granted, or at least I know I do. Thanks for speaking God’s word to us and reminding us we need to be in his word.
